MSc Experiment concept #1: Aquaponics

Initial Concept:

Aquaponics based farming practices for rural villages. Vegetable based pellet feed for Tilapia to increase nutrients in meat.

Purpose:

To identify ways of increasing nutrient intake in the populace via small-scale, sustainable agricultural practices.

Experiment set-up:

Set-up zones within a greenhouse where you can regulate light, heat, and aeration/oxygenation within the water to grow staple crops like corn, potatoes, peas, beans, tomatoes, and greens. Each zone will have light and heat lamps attached to a computer interface that is hooked up to a NOAA site with real-time weather condition for each of the different zones:

  • Haiti
  • Nepal
  • Congo
  • Afghanistan
  • Mali
  • South Sudan
  • Rio De Janeiro
  • Romania
  • USA (Wyoming)
  • Manila
Zones are based on weather and growing conditions, as well as the areas' economic condition.

Each zone should be self contained, with heat, moisture, and sunlight as they would be in the actual environment.
